ChaSTE sends data

ISRO has released a graph of the temperature variation on lunar surface with increase in depth measured by the ChaSTE payload onboard Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander module. (Image: ISRO)

First such data

This is the first such profile for the lunar south pole. Detailed observations are underway, ISRO said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). (Image: ISRO)

Chandrayaan's payloads

Chandrayaan-3 has 6 payloads in total - one propulsion module payload, three lander payloads and two rover payloads.

ChaSTE payload

ChaSTE (Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment) measures the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the pole, to understand the thermal behaviour of the moon's surface. (Image: PRL website)

What it does

ChaSTE aims at in-situ measurements of thermal conductivity and temperature profile on the lunar surface to derive the vertical temperature gradient. (Image: PRL website)

Temperature probe

ChaSTE has a temperature probe equipped with a controlled penetration mechanism capable of reaching a depth of 10 cm beneath the surface. (Image: ISRO)

Sensors

The probe is fitted with 10 individual temperature sensors. (Image: PRL website)

Who made it?

The payload is developed by a team led by the Space Physics Laboratory (SPL), VSSC in collaboration with PRL, Ahmedabad, ISRO said. (Image: PRL website)
