Dangerous two-wheeler riding practices are a concerning issue in India, leading to numerous accidents and injuries. Despite the government’s efforts to curb irresponsible riding habits, there are a host of common traffic violations that can lead to life-threatening experiences.

Drunk riding

​Drunk riding can lead to impaired judgment, blurred vision, lack of control on the motorcycle/scooter, which might lead to life-threatening accidents. It is a serious yet common traffic violation in India and is subject to strict punishments and fines.​

Using phone while riding

This is a practice which plagues both car and two-wheeler users. While riding, your focus should be on the road at all times and talking on phone, or using earphones, can compromise road awareness.

Riding without a helmet

This is the most common and dangerous two-wheeler riding habit in India. A helmet can significantly reduce the risk of head injury in the event of a crash. The person riding without a helmet is subject Rs 1,000 fine and sometimes, even license suspension.​

Making sudden or unsafe lane changes

While not using indicators itself is another concern, making sudden maneuvers to change lanes or overtaking from the left hand side of the vehicle is another dangerous riding habit. This can surprise other drivers and can lead to accidents.​

Not using rear-view mirrors

​Often, you’ll find motorcycles on roads without rear-view mirrors. It’s not that the OEMs don’t provide them but it’s the owners that, presumably, remove them to enhance the visual appeal. Doing so, comprises the awareness of surroundings, leading to potential accidents.​

Carrying too much luggage

​Often, riders use motorcycles to transport excessive loads such as multiple cylinders, water cans etc. This can make it difficult to control the vehicle and can also be dangerous if the luggage falls off and hits someone.​

Multiple ride pillions

​It’s a common sight in India to watch motorists riding with multiple pillions, usually three, which is a punishable offence. However, at times, people tend to level the irresponsible behaviour up by adding more - sometimes four, sometimes even 5, becoming a moving safety hazard.​
